It's been awhile since this blog was last updated. Some of you probably thought the International Cinema at Utah Valley University to be dead. But, I assure you, it is alive and well. In the very near future I will be posting our Spring lineup, and believe me, it is a great series of films! We've even got a few surprises this year that you won't want to miss. So, stay tuned!

One important note!!! Since UVSC has now become UVU, a NEW BLOG has been created for the International Cinema. This one will remain for archival purposes, but all future updates will be on the NEW BLOG!

DADA & DADAIST CINEMA SERIES with Alex Caldiero - Wednesdays @ 7:00 p.m. (Feb. 13 through Apr. 16) - Room LA 008 (bottom floor of the LA building)

We are more than pleased to announce that we will be presenting a DaDa/DaDa-ist film series at UVSC every Wednesday night @ 7:00 p.m. in room LA 008. This is an extended activity of the DAda WORKSHOP/CLASS that is currently HAPPENING here at UVSC (Humanities 320R - M, W, F, 1:00 - 1:50 - in room LA 108). We will do our first screening on February 13, with a final screening on April 16th.All in all there will be 9 screenings (observe the schedule below). Each week we will begin each screening with a bona fide DaDA film (each week to be announced/determined) followed by the daDa-IST/daDa-ish film listed on the schedule below. UVSC Professor/Artist-in-Residence/DAD(d)a Alex Caldieroooooooohhhwill be presenting each film in the flesh; helping with appropriate information, background, perspective, and insight into the MinD of each film...as well as facilitating a discussion in-between/after the films. This is an incredible and healthy opportunity to experience and interact with one of the most incredibly creative, vigorous and adolescent periods in film history...and to see where/how it has influenced other films. We will also, perhaps, see dada-ist elements in films not necessarily/really related to the phenomena known as 'Dada' that was rowdily rampant in the early 1900's, who's spirit still lives on (EVen) today. We will, hopefully, (with your help), conjure that spirit. We will also catch a nice glimpse into exactly where we are at, and where we ought to be with the film medium NOWADAYS. Please attend. Volver - November 15th - 6:00 PM - LA101

Volver, the 2006 smash hit by acclaimed Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, will be screened at UVSC as part of Reel Film and Phi Theta Kappa's continuing International Cinema program. Penelope Cruz earned a best actress Oscar nomination for her role as a strong-willed mother trying to hold her family together, who in the midst of turmoil, is surprised by a guest visitor.

Anthropology professor David Knowlton will provide a short lecture just prior to the film.

We apologize for confusion with the Paradise Now screening. In planning our screenings we didn't realize that the third Thursday of March was during Spring Break. We still plan to screen Paradise Now and hopefully will be screening it next Thursday. Please return to this site for updates. "Rashomon," the classic film by acclaimed Japanese director, Akira Kurosawa, will be screened at UVSC as part of Phi Theta Kappa's continuing International Cinema program.

Rashomon, sometimes referred to as "the best known Japanese film in the world," details events surrounding a crime and explores the notion that people perceive the same events differently.

"8 1/2," the highly acclaimed, Oscar-winning film from Italian director Federico Fellini willl be screened at UVSC as part of Phi Theta Kappa's new International Cinema program. Humanity's professor Alex Caldiero will provide a short lecture just prior to the film.

"8 1/2" tells the story of Guido Anselmi, a famous movie director under pressure who loses all inspiration for his next big film.

International Cinema Night at UVSC

Phi Theta Kappa, UVSC's International Honors Society, presents International Cinema, a new forum for watching and discussing global issues through international films. All students, faculty, and members of the community are invited to attend.

The film roster and event details can be found at uvscic.blogspot.com. If you are a professor and would like to suggest a film, or prepare a short lecture (15-20 min.) in conjunction with any of the films being presented, please contact the organizers.

It is our hope that professors will offer extra credit to students for attending these movie nights and participating in group discussions, both during the event and online at the blog.

PTK has created an International Cinema night at UVSC. Please view our roster to the right. If you would like to give a short (15-20 min.) lecture before any of these films, please send a short email with a summary of what you'd like to say. We welcome you to participate. Please suggest future films as well.

We'd also like to encourage you to invite your students to attend our events for extra credit. We plan to discuss ideas on this blog after each film. Perhaps your students could add some of their comments, too?

How are Che Guevara’s adolescent motorcycle trip, a young German racing to prevent a crime, and a Parisian girl finding love for the first time interrelated? For starters, you’ll be able to see each of them on campus throughout the 2007 school year. That’s because UVSC’s international honors society, Phi Theta Kappa, will debut their Utah Valley International Cinema (UVIC) program to campus audiences this December. The organization’s hope is that this international film experience will assist in educating students about global issues, while providing quality entertainment. As UVIC’s student organizer, Torben Bernhard puts it, “The international film scene is thriving, (but) despite the increase in exposure, many people still have not seen the many great foreign films that have been released over (the past) 50 years.”

Students, staff and faculty that are interested in participating will be thrilled by the organization's free admission, with many shows containing an added bonus. “The cinema intends to become a permanent fixture of UVSC in the next few years, and we've also invited faculty to participate by giving short lectures at the beginning of films,” stated Bernhard. Beginning in January, films will be exhibited the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at a UVSC venue. The selections include films from locations that are as diverse as the Middle East to South America and Africa. Bernhard’s hope is that the campus community will not only become involved in the events, but also in the discussions that the filmmakers raise. “The films will deal with issues from terrorism, love, redemption to strong cultural tradition. (I hope they) will spark up great conversation and help us start thinking more ‘internationally.’”
